Engelberth Construction is currently renovating and constructing an addition to Mayo Healthcare Inc.’s 50 bed skilled nursing facility in Northfield, Vermont. The CM project, which began in November, consists of a 4,800 sf addition and just over 8,000 sf of renovations which will be carried out in phases to accommodate the residents occupying the facility during construction. Details include a new main entrance canopy and vestibule addition, various resident room conversions to single or two-bed occupancy, and an addition with 5 single-bed and 4 two-bed resident bedrooms. Within the existing residential wings, renovations will introduce a new nursing work center, resident gathering space, visitor lounge, storage room and restrooms. Reconstruction of the Central Core will include the main nursing station, report room, coordinators’ office, medication prep room, business office and PT/OT gym. Infrastructure improvements and a light refinishing of the remaining corridors will unify the spaces and round out the project due for completion in the fall.

When Engelberth Construction sets a goal, they know how to meet it — and their United Way Campaign this year was proof to be sure! With an already stellar record of 69% participation, they blew past that and got to nearly 79% this year! And, to top that great increase, they exceeded last year’s total with an additional $4,127. The company incented pledging by creating a raffle for 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 extra vacation days and then added two more five-day prizes when their campaign met both their monetary and participation goals. And who says multiple locations makes a campaign difficult?? Not so, say the folks at Engelberth. A huge THANK YOU to the employees and management for the commitment to community.

Engelberth Construction is currently underway with renovations and an addition to the Hanover Inn at Dartmouth College. The CM project consists of a complete rejuvenation of the historic Inn. The upper floors of the adjoining Lang building on Hanover’s Main Street will be converted from office space into 14 guest rooms adding to the Inn’s current 93 rooms. A 12,000 sf addition between the Inn and the Hopkins Center will centralize the hotel’s meeting space and will include two larger banquet/function rooms on the ground floor with seven conference spaces on the lower level of the addition. The Inn’s restaurants will also be relocated with the new restaurant being moved to the corner of Main and Wheelock Streets.

Designed by Cambridge Seven Associates of Cambridge, MA, work commenced at the end of September and the multi-phased project is scheduled for reopening in spring 2012 with final completion of all work in fall 2012. The veteran duo – ECI Project Manager Dick Terk, and ECI Superintendent Mike Pierce are leading the team. They have worked on numerous Dartmouth College facility projects, most recently the transformation of Thayer Hall into the Class of 1953 Dining Commons.

With an average of 120 workers on site daily for fifteen weeks, the $8.2 million renovation of Forest Hall was anything but ordinary. Completed on a fast track summer schedule to ensure accommodations for incoming students, crews worked 10 – 12 hour days, six days a week. During the renovation, the entire mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems were upgraded. Windows throughout the 61,294 sf building were replaced and a new elevator shaft was constructed. Within the existing footprint, nine new single student rooms, one double and a new lounge and kitchen were created for student gatherings. All 130 of the existing student rooms underwent extensive renovations including new flooring, doors and frames, paint and built in wardrobe dressers.

On the outside of the building crews constructed a new chiller courtyard, installed two new electrical transformers and spruced up the entrances to the building.

The successful and timely completion of this project is a true testament to the benefits of detailed preconstruction planning, and a hard working dedicated team. Thank you to our employees and numerous subcontractors and suppliers and to the project’s engineers and the designer, Smith Alvarez Sienkiewycz Architects.

Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital posted the following press release marking the start of construction of the new medical-surgical wing:

Wall-Breaking Marks the Future of Care at APD

September 29, 2011—On Tuesday, September 27, a ”wall-breaking” ceremony at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital launched the construction of the Closey and Whit Dickey Medical-Surgical Wing.

Many members of the APD “family” joined in the wall-breaking celebration and were accompanied by a live jazz quartet from Hanover High School. “We are renovating our space to improve patient privacy, convenience and safety,” states Harry G. Dorman, III, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, “and to provide the best healing environment for patients, families and staff.” The renovated wing will house 19 patient rooms, 17 of which will be private with private baths, including a palliative care room. The renovation will also upgrade heating, ventilation and electrical systems, and be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) specifications.

The new wing is named in honor of Lebanon residents Closey and Whit Dickey. “Closey and Whit have been extraordinarily generous and tireless supporters of APD,” states Melanie N. Moore, Associate Vice President of Philanthropy and Community Relations. “As chairs of the 2004 capital campaign, the Dickeys contributed $1,000,000 toward the expansion and renovation of both the Robert A. Mesropian Center for Community Care (RAMCCC) and the hospital. We are privileged to name the future patient wing for them. We also wish to acknowledge the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, which provided very generous support for the RAMCCC project and the upcoming renovation of the medical-surgical wing.”

The current construction represents the first stage of a $16.5 million project. The second stage will include a new radiology unit, upgraded pre- and post-operative areas, a new registration area, and a new entrance that will greatly improve access to the facility. The local construction management firm, Engelberth Construction, Inc., will head up the construction and help assure that there is no interruption in APD’s services, and to minimize any inconvenience to patients and visitors. Designs for the project were completed by Lavallee Brensinger Architects of Manchester, NH.

“We’re excited about the significant upgrades to the Hospital and what it means for health care in our community,” says Dorman. “Our services continue to expand, and it’s time for our 1960’s facility to match the quality of service and patient care we provide on a daily basis. We could not tackle a project of this magnitude without the support of the community, and we look forward to engaging our friends and neighbors in this effort in the months ahead.”

Keene State College recently posted the following announcement regarding the TDS Center project:

Construction bids for the new Technology, Design and Safety (TDS) Center were opened last week from five pre-qualified contractors, four of which were within Keene State College’s construction budget. The low bid was received from Engelberth Construction Company for $12,313,124. This successful bid enables the TDS project to begin quickly so it can be completed in 13 months, prior to the start of the Fall 2012 semester. Engelberth will begin work on July 11, 2011, initially focusing on demolition of the existing Adams Technology Center and the west portion of Butterfield Hall. Construction fencing will be installed shortly.

Led by Architerra Inc., of Boston, and with considerable effort from RFS Engineering of Laconia, TDS faculty, and KSC’s Physical Plant, Finance and Planning and USNH Capital Projects staff, the design team worked diligently to keep both the scope and cost for this project within budget, while maintaining an eye towards rapid design completion. As a result of the team’s hard work, the per foot construction cost as bid is $237.

This pricing is also evidence of Engelberth’s good work and commitment to both Keene State College and our community over the last ten years, including the Pondside Apartments, Zorn Dining Commons, Media Arts Center, Central Heating Plant and Fiske and Huntress Hall renovations. The TDS Center building is designed to achieve significant energy efficiency and a U.S. Green Building Council LEED Platinum rating.

We continue to be most appreciative of the ongoing support received from USNH Trustees. The College could not move forward with the TDS effort without it. In addition, this dovetails with the launch of a focused fund-raising effort by the Advancement Division to support this initiative.

Project timing couldn’t be better in terms of market pricing conditions. Starting the TDS project will help USNH quickly draw upon FY2010 State Capital Appropriations. Trustee action recognizes the importance of academic programs offered in the Technology, Design and Safety Center and how these programs will help stabilize future enrollment.

In May, many TDS faculty were relocated to Elliot Hall, 2nd Floor. Prior to the start of the Fall 2011 semester, Architecture and Sustainable Product Design labs and faculty will be relocated to 57 Ralston St., where classroom trailer and building renovations are underway.

If you’d like more information about the TDS Center, please view the PowerPoint presentation below. We look forward to updating you again on the progress of this important project.

Engelberth recently began renovations to Dartmouth College’s Thompson Arena, home of the Big Green men’s and women’s hockey teams. The project will replace, renew and modernize the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems of the 83,000 sf hockey arena built in 1975.

Work includes a new rink refrigeration system that will allow for more efficient cooling of the rink slab below the hockey playing surface; new air handling and dehumidification systems which will allow the arena’s air temperature to be adjusted dependant on fan attendance without affecting the ice; new, more efficient arena lighting system and controls; a new snow melt pit for the zamboni room; and the installation of fire sprinkler systems and temperature and climate controls in the locker rooms and other areas. A new set of dasher boards and glass is also planned. The current set of worn boards and badly scuffed glass will be replaced by a state-of-the-art system that will feature more flex upon impact from bodychecks, and tempered and treated glass panels that are more resilient to scuffs and scratches from play.

VanZelm Engineers of Farmington, CT assisted the college with the design. The project is scheduled for completion in September.
