This highly complex project has been likened to building a “ship in a bottle” due to the pre-existing glass roof above the enclosed space where the building was constructed. Under extremely tight conditions, Engelberth crews built two interconnected four story wings by maneuvering materials and equipment through a tight corridor of the existing facility, all while the existing offices and highly sensitive labs around the perimeter remained operational. The new wings added 35,000 sf of research-oriented space to the University of Vermont’s medical campus including much needed offices and services for staff, faculty and students. Constructed largely of transparent and translucent glass to allow natural light to flow through the offices, the new wings feature demountable partitions and a raised floor system with under floor air delivery and power distribution. Both wings are linked to the existing Given Building on each floor to take advantage of the existing infrastructure such as chilled water, elevators and restrooms. The new facility is seeking Silver LEED Certification with the possibility of Gold.
