Middlebury College Biomass Facility
Middlebury, Vermont
The construction of the new biomass steam generating plant consisted of constructing an 8,100 sf addition and renovating approximately 4,800 sf to the existing service building. To utilize the new facility as an educational tool, a glass architectural enclosure was used to enclose the mechanical room enabling outside viewers the opportunity to observe the generation process at work. The technology used for the new biomass facility includes a Chiptec B series gasifier that converts the biomass, or woodchips, into gas. The gasifier is coupled to a Johnson fire tube boiler that generates 250 psig of saturated steam. The state-of-the-art facility cuts the college’s use of number six fuel oil in half, and is expected to reduce heating costs by as much as 25 percent. This alternative also cuts the College’s greenhouse gas emissions by 12,500 metric tons annually.
